How to Draw an Inside a Volcano
Draw an inside a volcano in 11 easy steps, about 8 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the cone.
Step 1: The cone
Start low on each side and draw 2 slopes leaning in. Stop before they meet, with a gap on top.
Tip Make both slopes the same steepness.
Step 2: Ground
Under the cone draw a long flat ground line, a little wider than the cone.
Step 3: Magma chamber
In the middle of the ground line draw a big dome. Start and stop on the line.
Tip This is the magma chamber, where melted rock waits.
Step 4: The vent
From the top of the dome draw 2 lines straight up, then out to the tops of the slopes.
Tip The vent is the pipe the magma climbs.
Step 5: Rock layers
On each side draw a curve from the ground up to the vent, following the slope.
Step 6: Spilling lava
Start on the left slope. Draw a bumpy line up over the top and down to the right slope.
Tip Give the lava a round drip at each end.
Step 7: Ash cloud
Above the lava draw a big puffy cloud of ash with lots of round bumps.
Step 8: Grey ash
Go over your lines. Colour the ash cloud grey.
Step 9: Orange lava
Colour the vent and the spilling lava orange.
Step 10: Red magma
Colour the magma chamber red.
Step 11: Brown rock
Colour the rock of the cone brown, on both sides of the vent. Your cutaway volcano is done!

Your finished drawing
Follow the steps above and this is where you end up: an inside a volcano, drawn by you.
