How to Draw an Icosahedron

13 steps · Medium · about 10 min

Draw an icosahedron in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: six-sided outline.

Print

  1. Step 1: Six-sided outline

Draw a big hexagon standing on a point: a point on top, 2 upright sides and a point below.

Tip All 6 sides are the same length.

  2. Step 2: Middle triangle

In the middle draw a triangle pointing up. Leave a gap between each corner and the outline.

Tip Its flat bottom sits a little below the middle of the hexagon.

  3. Step 3: Two big eyes

In the middle of the triangle draw 2 big egg eyes. Add a black dot with a shine in each.

  4. Step 4: Big smile

Leave a gap under the eyes, then draw a wide U smile from under one eye to the other.

  5. Step 5: Rosy cheeks

Beside each end of the smile, leaving a small gap, draw a small sideways oval cheek.

  6. Step 6: Three short lines

Start at each corner of the triangle. Draw a short straight line out and stop at the nearest outline corner.

Tip Each short line points straight away from the middle.

  7. Step 7: Top side lines

Start at each top side corner. Draw 2 lines in and stop at the 2 nearest triangle corners.

  8. Step 8: Bottom lines

Start at the bottom point. Draw 2 lines up and stop at the 2 bottom corners of the triangle.

Tip Count the triangles: 10 show, and 10 more hide round the back.

  9. Step 9: Sparkles

Draw 2 sparkle stars on each side of the shape, one high and one low.

Tip A sparkle star has 4 points: up, down, left and right.

  10. Step 10: Floor and shadow

Under the bottom point draw a thin flat oval shadow. Add a floor line out from each end.

Tip The point rests on the floor in the middle of the shadow.

  11. Step 11: Pink cheeks, yellow front

Go over your lines. Colour the cheeks pink, then the middle triangle and sparkles yellow. Leave the eyes white.

  12. Step 12: Orange faces

Colour the 3 big triangles that touch the middle one orange.

  13. Step 13: Brown edge, grey shadow

Colour the 6 thin triangles round the edge brown and the shadow grey. Your icosahedron is done!
