How to Draw an Alto Clef

13 steps · Medium · about 10 min

Draw an alto clef in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the thick bar.

Print

  1. Step 1: The thick bar

A little left of the middle of your paper, draw a tall thin box standing up.

Tip It is as tall as the 5 music lines will be.

  2. Step 2: The thin bar

Just right of it draw a much thinner bar, the same height, with a small gap between.

  3. Step 3: Two big curves

From the middle of the thin bar sweep a curve right, up and over, then stop. Mirror it below.

Tip Each one is shaped like a big ear. Make them match.

  4. Step 4: Two balls

From the end of each curve, curl round into a small ball, like a snail.

  5. Step 5: Make them fat

From each ball draw a second curve inside the first. Meet it at the middle point.

Tip Keep the gap widest on the right side and thin near the middle.

  6. Step 6: The middle line

Draw a long flat line across your paper, through the point where the curves meet. Hop over both bars.

Tip This line is the note middle C, so it is also called the C clef.

  7. Step 7: Top and bottom lines

Draw a long line across the top of the bars and another across the bottom.

  8. Step 8: Two lines between

Draw 1 more line halfway in each gap. Hop over the bars and the fat curves. Count 5 lines!

Tip Never draw inside the bars or the fat curves.

  9. Step 9: Two little notes

Draw a little music note top left and one bottom right: a dot, a stem, a flag.

  10. Step 10: Sparkles

Draw a sparkle star in the top right corner and one in the bottom left corner.

Tip A sparkle star has 4 points: up, down, left and right.

  11. Step 11: Yellow sparkles

    Colour the 2 sparkles yellow.

  12. Step 12: Blue alto clef

Colour both bars and both fat curves blue, right into the balls.

  13. Step 13: Purple little notes

Colour the 2 little note dots purple. Go over your lines, and your alto clef is ready to play!
