How to Draw a Hummingbird
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: a round head.
Step 1: A round head
Left of the middle and a little high, draw a round head about plum size. Leave room on the right.
Tip Let the forehead bulge out a little at the top left.
Step 2: Long slim beak
From the front of the head draw a long slim beak pointing down and left, as long as the head.
Tip Thin like a drinking straw, with a soft round tip, not a sharp spike.
Step 3: One big eye
Above the beak draw one huge eye with a big black dot and 2 white shines.
Tip The eye sits toward the beak, so the bird looks along it.
Step 4: Body and throat
Draw a teardrop body under the head, pointing down-right. Add a bumpy throat line from its chest to the head.
Tip Like a raindrop blown sideways. Keep the body narrower than the head.
Step 5: Big near wing
From the back draw a banana wing sweeping up-right, 3 feather bumps below. Close its base with a curve.
Tip The wing grows out of the back, not the head; widest at the shoulder.
Step 6: Far wing behind
Behind the big wing draw a skinnier wing standing up straighter, from its front edge up to a round tip.
Tip The 2 wings make a V. Only the top of the far wing shows.
Step 7: Fan tail
From the bottom point draw a little fan tail pointing down and right, with 3 feather bumps on the end.
Tip The fan gets wider as it leaves the body, like a half-open hand fan.
Step 8: Tulip flower
At the beak tip draw a tulip: a big U cup, almost head-sized, with 3 round bumps on top.
Tip The beak tip dips into the top of the cup, between the bumps: the bird is drinking.
Step 9: Stem, leaf and ground
From the tulip draw a curved stem down to a short ground hill. Halfway down add a leaf pointing right.
Step 10: Hum lines
Past the tip of the big wing draw 2 little rainbows, one beyond the other, for the humming blur.
Step 11: Pink tulip, green leaf
Colour the tulip pink and the leaf light green.
Step 12: Red throat, green bird
Colour the throat patch red. Colour the head and body green around it. Leave the eye white.
Step 13: Teal wings, grey beak
Colour both wings and the tail teal, and the beak dark grey. Your hummingbird is ready to hum!
