How to Draw a Hot Rod

13 steps · Medium · about 10 min

Draw a hot rod in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: car body.

Print

  1. Step 1: Car body

Start low on the left. Go up over a tall grille, dip, over a small roof. Stop on the right.

Tip A hot rod has no bonnet: the top dips behind the grille.

  2. Step 2: Arches and tyres

Start where you stopped. Draw a big arch, a flat belly, a small arch, stopping at the grille. Add tyres.

Tip Put a round hub in each tyre. The back tyre is much bigger than the front one.

  3. Step 3: Headlight eye

On the grille, draw 1 big round headlight. Colour a pupil inside, leaving 2 white shine dots.

  4. Step 4: Engine and stacks

Start on the dip behind the grille. Draw a box up and back down to the dip. Add 3 chimneys.

  5. Step 5: Windows

Start on the windscreen. Draw a slant up, a low arch under the roof, down, and back to the start.

Tip Add 1 slanted pillar to split the windscreen from the side window.

  6. Step 6: Smile and bumper

Under the headlight, start near one side and draw a small U smile, ending near the other. Add a bumper.

  7. Step 7: Door and flames

Draw a door line from the window down to the back arch. Add a flame with 3 tips sweeping back.

Tip Add a small oval handle just left of the door line.

  8. Step 8: Tail light and pipe

Add a small oval tail light. From low on the back, draw a short pipe, back to the body.

  9. Step 9: Road and shine

Start at the bumper. Draw a road line touching both tyres, stopping past the pipe. Add a windscreen shine.

  10. Step 10: Yellow lights, grey bits

Colour both lights yellow, around the pupil. Colour the hubs, bumper, handle, pipe, engine and stacks grey.

  11. Step 11: Orange flames, sky window

Colour the flames orange. Then colour the window sky blue, leaving the shine white.

  12. Step 12: Navy body

Go over your lines, then colour the body navy, going around the flames, window, lights, handle and bumper.

  13. Step 13: Black tyres

Colour the tyres black, going around the grey hubs.
