How to Draw a Hollywood Sign

Step 1: The big hill

Start low on the left. Draw one big round hill, up and over, and stop low on the right.

Tip Make it wide: it has to hold 9 big letters.

Step 2: The ground

Start left of the hill. Draw a straight ground line under it and stop past the other side.

Step 3: H and O

On the hill's left, draw a tall block H. Beside it, a round-cornered box O with a thin box inside.

Tip Block letters are drawn as outlines, so you can leave them white.

Step 4: Two Ls

Next, draw 2 block Ls side by side, just as tall: a thick stem with a flat foot.

Step 5: The Y

In the middle of the hill, draw a block Y: 2 thick arms meeting on a thick stem.

Tip Keep every letter standing on the same level.

Step 6: The W

Next to the Y, draw a wide block W: 2 thick Vs joined in the middle.

Tip Too tricky? Draw a thin W first, then draw round it and rub the thin one out.

Step 7: Two more Os

Draw 2 more Os like the first: a round-cornered box with a thin box inside each.

Step 8: The D

Finish the word with a block D: a straight back, 2 round corners and a thin D inside.

Tip Read it out: H, O, L, L, Y, W, O, O, D.

Step 9: Three bushes

On the ground line, draw 3 round bushes with 3 soft bumps each: 2 left, 1 right.

Step 10: The sun

In the top right corner, draw a round sun with 8 short rays round it, like wheel spokes.

Tip Leave a little gap between the sun and each ray.

Step 11: Yellow sun, sandy ground

Go over your lines. Colour the sun yellow and the ground under the line sandy, right to the edges.

Step 12: Leaf green hill

Colour the hill leaf green, around the letters and bushes and inside the Os and D. Leave the letters white.

Tip Colour slowly next to the letters so the green stays outside them.

Step 13: Dark green bushes

Colour the 3 bushes dark green, and your Hollywood sign is done!
