How to Draw a High Top Sneaker

Step 1: Ground and fat sole

Draw a ground line a hand up. On it, draw one long fat sole with the toe end lifting up.

Tip As long as your hand and as fat as your thumb is wide.

Step 2: Round toe cap

Start at the toe tip. Draw a big half-dome up and over, stopping on the sole a third along.

Step 3: Tall ankle

Start behind the toe cap. Scoop up high, go across the top, and down the heel, stopping on the sole.

Tip A high-top is tall: make the ankle part about as tall as the toe cap is long.

Step 4: Ankle band

Start on the front edge under the top. Draw a band line across, stopping on the heel.

Step 5: Lace panel

Start on the band, a thumb behind the front. Draw a long J down, stopping on the scoop.

Step 6: Eight lace rings

Inside the panel, draw 4 pairs of little rings, climbing like the rungs of a ladder.

Tip Tilt each pair a little, so it sits square across the panel.

Step 7: Short tongue

Start at the front top corner. Draw a short rounded tab above the top, stopping on the top edge.

Step 8: Criss-cross laces

Lace ring to ring with 3 X's going up. Join the top 2 rings with an upside-down V.

Step 9: Tied bow

Where the V meets at the top, draw a small oval knot. Add a fat loop out each side.

Tip Loops go up and out, the laces hang down from the knot: that makes it a bow.

Step 10: Sole line and treads

Start at the toe end. Draw a line along the sole, stopping at the heel. Add 5 tread lines below.

Step 11: Grey rubber

Colour the sole under the line grey. Leave the top of the sole and the toe cap white.

Step 12: Blue canvas

Colour the canvas and the tongue blue. Leave the lace panel, the laces and the bow white.

Tip Go over your lines, and your high-top sneaker is done!
