How to Draw a Dictionary
Draw a dictionary in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: front cover.
Step 1: Front cover
In the middle of your paper draw a big tall rectangle, taller than it is wide.
Tip Make it big: a dictionary is a fat, heavy book.
Step 2: The spine
Start at the cover's top left corner. Draw a narrow strip down the side. Stop at the bottom corner.
Step 3: Thick pages
Start at the spine's top corner. Draw the thick pages up, across and down. Stop at the cover's bottom corner.
Tip Lots of pages make it thick.
Step 4: Page lines
On the pages draw 3 thin lines that go across the top and then down the side.
Step 5: The label
On the cover draw a wide box for the label, a little above the middle.
Step 6: Letter A
On the left of the label draw a big letter A: a pointy hat with a bar across.
Step 7: Dash and Z
Next to the A draw a short dash, then a big Z: across, slant down, across.
Tip A to Z means every word is inside.
Step 8: Spine bands
Across the spine draw 2 lines near the top and 2 lines near the bottom, for 2 bands.
Step 9: The table
Draw a table line under the book, from far left to far right.
Step 10: Cream pages
Go over your lines. Colour the page edges cream, above the cover and beside it.
Step 11: Yellow label
Colour the label yellow around the letters, and the 2 spine bands yellow.
Step 12: Blue cover
Colour the cover blue, all around the yellow label. Leave the spine white for now.
Step 13: Navy spine
Colour the spine dark blue around its yellow bands. Your dictionary is done!

Your finished drawing
Follow the steps above and this is where you end up: a dictionary, drawn by you.
