How to Draw a Hen with Chicks
Draw a hen with chicks in 14 easy steps, about 11 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: hen's head.
Step 1: Hen's head
Near the top, left of the middle, draw a round head, a little wider than tall.
Tip Leave lots of room below for her body, and room on both sides for her chicks.
Step 2: Comb, beak, wattle
Draw 3 round bumps on top of the head. Add a pointed beak in front and a wattle below it.
Tip The middle bump of the comb is the tallest.
Step 3: One big eye
Just behind the beak, draw a big round eye with a big black dot and a white shine.
Step 4: Plump body
Start behind the head. Draw a big egg: along the back, round the rump and tummy, up the chest.
Tip A mother hen is plump: make the body much bigger than the head.
Step 5: Fan tail
From the back, draw 3 round-tipped feathers fanning up, then down to the rump.
Step 6: Leaf wing
On the body, draw a leaf-shaped wing: round at the front, pointed at the back. Add 2 feather lines.
Step 7: Two legs
Under the tummy, draw 2 thin legs. Give each one 3 toes fanning forward.
Tip Keep the 2 feet apart, and level with each other.
Step 8: Three chicks
Draw 1 chick in front of the hen and 2 behind: a small round head on an egg body.
Tip The chicks are much smaller than their mum. All 3 look towards her.
Step 9: Beaks and eyes
Give each chick a tiny pointed beak facing the hen, and a black dot eye.
Step 10: Chick feet, ground
Under each chick, draw 2 tiny feet. Then draw a long ground line under everyone's toes.
Step 11: Yellow chicks
Colour the 3 chicks yellow.
Step 12: Orange beaks, feet
Colour every beak and every foot orange: the hen's and the chicks'.
Step 13: Brown hen, red comb
Colour the hen's head and body light brown, around the wing. Colour the comb and wattle red.
Tip Leave her eye white.
Step 14: Dark wing and tail
Colour the wing and the fan tail dark brown. Your hen and her chicks are done!
