How to Draw a Hat
Draw a hat in 12 easy steps, about 9 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: flat top.
Step 1: Flat top
Near the top, in the middle, draw a wide flat oval, about half as wide as your paper.
Tip Leave lots of room under it: the whole hat hangs from this oval.
Step 2: The crown
From each end of the oval, draw a line down past the middle. Join the bottoms with a smile curve.
Step 3: The wide brim
Start low on the left of the crown. Draw a wide brim out and round, stopping on the right side.
Tip The brim is almost twice as wide as the crown.
Step 4: Thick brim
Start at the brim's left edge. Draw a big smile curve under it and stop at the right edge.
Tip Keep the gap the same all the way round, about 2 fingers.
Step 5: Two big eyes
In the middle of the crown, draw 2 big round eyes a finger apart. Add black dots with white shines.
Step 6: Smile and cheeks
Start under the left eye, draw a U smile to under the right eye. Add a cheek beside each end.
Step 7: The ribbon band
Start on the left of the crown, 2 fingers above the bottom. Draw a smile curve across to the right.
Step 8: The bow
Draw a small oval knot in the middle of the band. Add a fat teardrop loop on each side.
Tip Loops are round at the far end and pointy at the knot.
Step 9: Fold lines
Inside each loop, draw 1 short curved fold line from the fat end in to the knot.
Step 10: Twinkles and a table
Draw a twinkle top right and a small one left of the crown. Add a table line under the brim.
Step 11: Cheeks, bow and twinkles
Colour the cheeks pink, and the bow and the twinkles yellow.
Step 12: Red band, purple hat
Colour the ribbon band red. Colour the top, crown and brim purple, going around the eyes, cheeks, band and bow.
Tip Leave the eyes white.
