How to Draw a Handstand
Draw a handstand in 12 easy steps, about 9 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: upside-down head.
Step 1: Upside-down head
Low on your paper, in the middle, draw an egg for the head with the chin pointing up.
Tip The whole gymnast is upside down. Leave a hand of space under the head.
Step 2: The face
Draw 2 big round eyes with black dots. Between the eyes and the chin, draw a small D mouth.
Tip The face is upside down, so the round side of the mouth points to the chin.
Step 3: Hair and bun
Draw hair round the bottom of the head, with a fringe curve well below the eyes. Add a hanging bun.
Step 4: Neck and leotard
Draw 2 neck lines above the chin. From the left one draw a leotard, ending at the right one.
Tip The leotard goes up to the hips, with a point in the middle.
Step 5: Arms straight down
From each sleeve draw an arm leaning out, wide at the shoulder, stopping at a thin wrist above the floor.
Tip Leave a finger of air between each arm and the head.
Step 6: Hands on the floor
From each wrist, draw a flat mitten with a thumb bump, back to the wrist. Add 3 finger lines.
Tip The thumbs point in towards the head.
Step 7: Legs pointing up
From the leotard draw 2 legs pointing up in a gentle V, 2 lines each, stopping near the top.
Step 8: Pointed feet
On each leg, start at one line, draw a pointed foot like a little flame, stop at the other line.
Tip Pointed toes make it look like a real gymnast.
Step 9: The floor
Draw 1 long floor line across under both hands, right under the fingertips.
Tip Both hands press on the same line. The bun hangs just above it.
Step 10: Pink mouth, peach skin
Colour the mouth and cheeks pink, then all the skin peach around them. Leave the eyes white.
Step 11: Purple leotard
Colour the leotard purple.
Step 12: Brown hair
Colour the hair and the bun brown. Go over your lines and your handstand is done!
