How to Draw a Ground Squirrel

13 steps · Medium · about 10 min

Draw a ground squirrel in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: soft round head.

Print

  1. Step 1: Soft round head

Near the top draw a soft round head, a little wider than tall.

Tip Leave room underneath for the tall body.

  2. Step 2: Tiny ears

On each top corner of the head draw a tiny round ear peeking out.

Tip Ground squirrels have very short ears.

  3. Step 3: Big eyes

On the middle of the head, a little to the left, draw 2 big oval eyes with black dots.

Tip Leave a tiny white shine in each eye.

  4. Step 4: Snout and smile

Under the left eye draw a snout poking out. From its nose, draw down to a w and a tooth.

Tip Rub out the head line inside the snout.

  5. Step 5: Tall back

Start on the head below the right ear. Draw a long back down and round to the ground.

Tip Draw the ground line first. The back bulges out most near the bottom.

  6. Step 6: Drooping paw

From under the chin draw an arm reaching forward and down to a round paw, then back up.

Tip The paw hangs down, like a squirrel on watch. Add 2 toe lines.

  7. Step 7: Round tummy

Start under the arm. Draw the tummy curving down and stop just above the ground.

  8. Step 8: Thigh and foot

Start on the back. Draw a big rainbow thigh, then a long flat foot. Stop at the ground.

Tip The toes poke out past the tummy. Add 2 toe lines.

  9. Step 9: Second paw

From under the snout draw a second arm and paw peeking out. Stop at the first arm.

Tip Only part of this arm shows.

  10. Step 10: Thin tail

Start low on the back. Draw a short thin tail along the ground and back to the body.

Tip Keep it thin, not bushy like a tree squirrel.

  11. Step 11: Tummy and speckles

From the chin draw a curve down to the thigh for the tummy patch. Add 3 speckles down the back.

  12. Step 12: Cream parts

Colour the snout, the tummy patch and the 3 speckles cream.

  13. Step 13: Colour it brown

Colour the rest of the ground squirrel light brown, around the cream parts. Leave the eyes white.
