How to Draw a Golden Spiral

13 steps · Medium · about 10 min

Draw a golden spiral in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: a long rectangle.

Print

  1. Step 1: A long rectangle

Draw a long rectangle on its side, a little more than one and a half times as wide as tall.

Tip On squared paper, make it 13 squares wide and 8 squares tall.

  2. Step 2: The biggest square

Start on the top side and draw a line straight down to the bottom, cutting off a big square.

Tip A square is as wide as it is tall: 8 by 8.

  3. Step 3: The next square

From the new line, draw a line across to the right side. The top part is a square.

Tip This square is 5 by 5.

  4. Step 4: A smaller square

From the last line, draw a line down to the bottom side. The right part is a square.

Tip This square is 3 by 3.

  5. Step 5: A little square

Start on the big square's side. Draw a short line across to the last line, making a square below.

Tip This square is 2 by 2.

  6. Step 6: Two tiny squares

Cut the tiny strip in half: start on its top and draw a short line down to its bottom.

    Tip Now you have 6 squares. Their sides go 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8.

  7. Step 7: The big curve

In the biggest square, start at the bottom left corner. Draw a round curve up to the top right corner.

Tip Each curve is a quarter of a circle.

  8. Step 8: Curve back down

Carry on from where you stopped. Curve across the next square, down to its bottom right corner.

  9. Step 9: Curl to the left

From where you stopped, curve round to the next square's bottom left corner, then up across the little square.

Tip Always go from one corner to the opposite corner.

  10. Step 10: The tiny curl

From there, finish with a tiny rainbow over the 2 tiniest squares, stopping on the line at the far side.

  11. Step 11: Yellow and pink

Colour the top right square yellow. Colour the square under it, in the corner, pink.

  12. Step 12: Orange and green

Colour the 2 tiniest squares orange. Colour the little square under them green.

  13. Step 13: A blue square

Go over your spiral, then colour the biggest square sky blue. Your golden spiral is done!
