How to Draw an Eighth Rest

Draw an eighth rest in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the dot.

Step 1: The dot
Left of the middle draw a circle. Start on its right side and stop early, leaving a small gap.
Tip Make the gap face right. The rest of the sign grows out of it.
Step 2: The swoop
From the top of the gap draw a smile curve to the right, swooping up to a sharp point.
Step 3: The slanted stem
From the point draw a long straight line slanting down to the left. Stop near the bottom.
Tip It looks like a number 7 with a dot on its nose.
Step 4: Fat stem
From the end go left a little, then draw a line back up beside the stem. Stop below the swoop.
Step 5: Under the swoop
From there turn left and curve like a smile to the bottom of the gap. Stop when it is closed.
Tip Keep this curve close under the first one, so the swoop stays thin.
Step 6: The middle line
Draw a long flat line across the middle, from side to side. Hop over the stem.
Tip Never draw inside the fat shape.
Step 7: Lines above
Draw 2 more long lines above: one through the sharp point, one higher up.
Step 8: Lines below
Draw 2 more long lines below: one across the stem, one under its foot.
Tip Music is written on 5 lines. Count them!
Step 9: Two little notes
Draw a little music note top left and one bottom right: a dot, a stem, a flag.
Step 10: Sparkles
Draw a sparkle star in the top right corner and one in the bottom left corner.
Tip A sparkle star has 4 points: up, down, left and right.
Step 11: Yellow sparkles
Colour the 2 sparkles yellow.
Step 12: Blue eighth rest
Colour the dot, the swoop and the stem blue, all the way into the point.
Step 13: Purple little notes
Colour the 2 little note dots purple. Go over your lines, and your eighth rest is ready!
