How to Draw a German Shorthaired Pointer

14 steps · Medium · about 11 min

Draw a German shorthaired pointer in 14 easy steps, about 11 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: egg head.

Print

  1. Step 1: Egg head

Near the top of your paper draw a big egg head, with a flat top and a round chin.

Tip Make it big: almost half of the drawing. Leave room below.

  2. Step 2: Long floppy ears

Start high on the head. Draw a long ear hanging past the chin. Stop on the cheek. Do both sides.

  3. Step 3: 2 big eyes

Just above the middle of the head draw 2 egg eyes a gap apart, with a black dot and shine.

  4. Step 4: Long snout

Under the eyes draw a big deep oval snout. Sit a rounded triangle nose on top and colour it brown.

Tip A pointer has a long snout for sniffing, so make the oval tall.

  5. Step 5: Smile and tongue

From the nose draw a short line down, then a w smile out to each side. Add a U tongue.

  6. Step 6: Slim body

Start under each ear. Draw a gentle C down to near the bottom. Join the ends with a sagging line.

Tip Pointers are slim, so keep the body about as wide as the head.

  7. Step 7: Collar and tag

Under the chin draw 2 sagging curves from the left side across to the right. Hang a round tag below.

  8. Step 8: Long front legs

From the collar, draw 2 long slim legs down to round paws, with a gap between them. Add toe lines.

Tip Rub out the body line inside the legs.

  9. Step 9: Back paws, short tail

Draw a hill paw at each bottom corner. On the body's right side draw a short stubby tail pointing up.

Tip This dog has a short tail, about as long as a paw.

  10. Step 10: The ground

Start at the left. Draw a long line under all 4 paws across to the right.

  11. Step 11: Patches and spots

On each side of the body draw a big bean patch. Dot 6 small brown spots on chest and legs.

Tip Keep the spots small and few, away from the lines.

  12. Step 12: White fur

Go over your lines. Leave the snout, body, legs, paws and tail white, or colour them with a white crayon.

  13. Step 13: Pink tongue, orange collar

Colour the tongue pink and the collar orange.

  14. Step 14: Brown head and patches

Colour the head, the ears and the 2 patches brown, around the snout. Leave the eyes white.
