How to Draw a Gelada

15 steps · Tricky · about 11 min

Draw a gelada in 15 steps, about 11 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the head.

Print

  1. Step 1: The head

Near the top, draw a big round head, a little wider than tall, with full cheeks.

Tip Make it big: half the whole gelada. Leave room below for the body.

  2. Step 2: Small round ears

On each side of the head, draw a small C ear sticking out, with a smaller C inside it.

  3. Step 3: Eyes and long nose

Across the middle, draw 2 big eggy eyes, well apart. Between them, draw a long nose, stopping above the chin.

  4. Step 4: Nostrils and smile

Low on the nose, colour 2 little dots side by side. Under the nose, draw a small U smile.

  5. Step 5: The shaggy cape

Start behind the left shoulder. Draw a big arc of soft bumps round the head, stopping behind the right shoulder.

Tip A shaggy cape like a lion's mane, a thumb out from the head.

  6. Step 6: The body

From each cheek, draw a bulging C down to the bottom, joined by a sagging curve.

  7. Step 7: Heart and tummy

High on the chest, draw a heart. Lower down, draw a small oval tummy.

Tip The red chest heart is its badge: it is the bleeding-heart monkey.

  8. Step 8: Two hanging arms

From under each cheek, draw an arm down beside the body, ending in a round mitten hand.

  9. Step 9: Two feet

Start on the bottom line. Draw a short leg down to a bun foot on the ground. Do both sides.

Tip Chunky feet like 2 little buns, with 2 short toe lines each.

  10. Step 10: Tapered tail

From behind the right foot, draw a tail along the ground and up, getting thinner, ending in a tuft.

  11. Step 11: Ground and grass

Draw a long ground line right under the feet and the tail. Add 3 grass blades at each end.

  12. Step 12: Tan patches

Go over your lines. Colour the tummy, hands, feet and the insides of the ears tan.

  13. Step 13: Red heart

Colour the heart on the chest bright red.

  14. Step 14: Brown fur

Colour the head, ears, cape, body, arms and tail brown, going around the eyes, nose, heart and tan parts.

    Tip Leave the eyes white.

  15. Step 15: Dark nose

Colour the long nose dark brown, going around the 2 nostrils. Your gelada is done!
