How to Draw a Fire Escape Building
Draw a fire escape building in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: tall building.
Step 1: Tall building
Draw a tall box building, ground to near the top, with a thin ledge on top poking out both sides.
Step 2: Windows
Draw 4 tall windows down the left side of the building and 4 down the right, leaving the middle clear.
Step 3: Landings
Down the middle draw 4 thin flat boxes for the iron landings, one at each floor, between the windows.
Tip The fire escape zigzags down the middle, so keep every window clear of it.
Step 4: Landing rails
On half of each landing draw 2 short posts with a rail across them. The stairs use the other half.
Step 5: Zigzag stairs
Join the landings with slanting stair bands, zigzagging up: each band starts on one landing and ends under the next.
Step 6: Stair treads
Draw 2 short lines across each slanting band for the stair treads.
Step 7: The door
At the bottom of the building draw an arched door standing on the ground.
Step 8: The ground
Draw the ground line across the bottom of the page.
Step 9: The lamp
On the right, draw a thin pole from the ground up to a small box lamp.
Step 10: The tree
On the left, draw a round bumpy treetop, then a short trunk from under it down to the ground.
Step 11: Sky windows, green tree
Go over your lines, then colour the windows sky blue and the tree top leaf green.
Step 12: Red bricks
Colour the building brick red around the windows, landings, stairs and door, and the ledge stone grey.
Step 13: Iron landings
Colour the landings, stairs, door and lamp dark slate, and the tree trunk wood brown. Your building is done!

Your finished drawing
Follow the steps above and this is where you end up: a fire escape building, drawn by you.
