How to Draw an Explosion

10 steps · Medium · about 8 min

Draw an explosion in 10 easy steps, about 8 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: spiky burst.

Print

  1. Step 1: Spiky burst

In the middle of the paper, draw a big spiky burst with 10 zigzag points, as wide as your hand.

  2. Step 2: Eyes and cheeks

In the middle, draw 2 big egg eyes with black dots and shines. Add a little cheek below each.

  3. Step 3: Big smile

Under the eyes, draw a wide open smile like a D on its back. Add a little tongue inside.

  4. Step 4: Five long flames

Start in a dip beside a point. Draw a long flame past it, ending in the next dip. Do 5.

Tip Make the flames different lengths and a little crooked, so it looks like a bang.

  5. Step 5: Five short flames

On the other 5 points, draw shorter flames: start in a dip, out to a tip, end in the next.

  6. Step 6: Spark lines

Past 4 of the short flames, leave a gap and draw a short straight spark line pointing out.

  7. Step 7: Flying bits

In the big gaps round the outside, draw 3 little round bits flying away from the bang.

  8. Step 8: Pink cheeks and tongue

Colour the cheeks and the tongue pink.

  9. Step 9: Yellow middle

Colour the spiky middle yellow, around the eyes, mouth and cheeks. Leave the eyes white.

  10. Step 10: Orange, red and black

Colour the flames orange and the flying bits red. Colour the mouth black, around the tongue. Boom!
