How to Draw an Empty Room

13 steps · Medium · about 10 min

Draw an empty room in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: a big box.

Print

  1. Step 1: A big box

Draw a big box that nearly fills your page, a bit wider than it is tall.

Tip This box is the open front of the room, where you stand.

  2. Step 2: The back wall

In the very middle of the big box draw a box half as big, the same shape.

Tip Far away things look small, so the back wall is a smaller box.

  3. Step 3: Four corner lines

Start at each corner of the big box. Draw a straight line in, stopping at the small box's nearest corner.

Tip Now you can see a floor, a ceiling and 2 side walls.

  4. Step 4: A window

In the middle of the back wall draw a square window. Add a cross, starting and stopping on its edges.

  5. Step 5: A door

Start on the left wall's floor line. Draw a tall door: up, slanting across, down. Stop on the floor line.

Tip The top of the door slants the same way as the ceiling line above it.

  6. Step 6: Door knob

Draw a small round knob on the door, about half way up, near its far edge.

  7. Step 7: Floorboards

Start on the back wall's bottom line. Draw 5 straight lines fanning out, stopping on the front edge.

Tip The gaps get wider as the boards come towards you.

  8. Step 8: A bare bulb

Start at the middle of the top edge. Draw a short cord down and stop. Hang a round bulb there.

  9. Step 9: Yellow and blue

Go over your lines. Colour the bulb and the knob yellow, and the window light blue.

  10. Step 10: Pale back wall

Colour the back wall pale yellow around the window. Leave the ceiling white.

  11. Step 11: Sandy side walls

Colour the 2 side walls a sandy colour. Go around the door.

  12. Step 12: Wood floor

Colour the floor light brown, right up to the back wall.

  13. Step 13: Brown door

Colour the door dark brown around its knob. Your empty room is done!

Tip Press a little harder on the door so it comes out darker than the floor.
