How to Draw an Earwig

12 steps · Medium · about 9 min

Draw an earwig in 12 easy steps, about 9 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the head.

Print

  1. Step 1: The head

Near the top draw an egg lying on its side for the head, with round cheeks and a smaller chin.

Tip Leave lots of room below for a long body.

  2. Step 2: Long feelers

From the top of the head draw a long thin feeler sweeping up and out to a point. Both sides.

  3. Step 3: 2 big eyes

In the middle of the head draw 2 big egg eyes one eye apart. Colour a black dot in each.

  4. Step 4: Smile and cheeks

Start under the left eye. Draw a flat line to the right eye, then a U under it. Add cheeks.

  5. Step 5: A long slim body

Start on the left of the chin. Draw a long thin egg hanging down, stop on the chin's right.

Tip An earwig is long and thin, like a little stick with a head.

  6. Step 6: Short wing covers

Just under the head draw a short line down the middle, then a curved line across under it.

  7. Step 7: Rings down the tail

Under the wing covers draw 4 curved lines across the body, a thumb apart, from edge to edge.

  8. Step 8: 2 pincers

At the tail tip draw a fat curved horn that bows out, then in to a sharp point. Both sides.

Tip The 2 points nearly meet, like tongs.

  9. Step 9: Front legs

Start on the body under the head. Draw a bent leg out and down to a pointed foot. Both sides.

  10. Step 10: Middle and back legs

Start on the body by the first ring. Draw a bent leg the same way. Last pair: 2 rings lower.

  11. Step 11: Pink cheeks, brown body

Colour the cheeks pink. Colour the head and body reddish brown, around the cheeks and mouth. Leave the eyes white.

  12. Step 12: Red mouth, dark legs

Colour the open mouth red. Colour the 6 legs and 2 pincers dark brown, and your earwig is done!
