How to Draw a Dune
Draw a dune in 11 easy steps, about 8 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the ground.
Step 1: The ground
Low on your paper, draw a long straight ground line from the left edge to the right edge.
Step 2: The big dune
From the ground at the left edge, slope gently up to a point, then steeply down to the ground.
Tip The point sits right of the middle: one long gentle side, one short steep side.
Step 3: The ridge
From the point, draw 1 curved line down the front of the dune, stopping on the ground.
Step 4: A dune behind
Start on the left edge, higher up. Draw a second hill, higher on the paper, stopping on the big dune.
Step 5: A far dune
Start on the back dune. Draw a third hill up over a soft top and down to the right edge.
Step 6: The sun
In the top left corner, draw a round sun with 8 short rays round it.
Step 7: Dry grass
On the big dune, draw 1 small tuft of dry grass: 3 blades fanning up from one spot.
Step 8: Wind lines
Between the sun and the far dune, draw 2 long curved wind lines, one under the other.
Step 9: Sandy dune
Colour the big dune and the flat sand in front sand yellow, right to the edges of the page.
Step 10: Yellow sun
Colour the sun yellow.
Step 11: Tan dunes behind
Colour the two dunes behind tan, out to the edges. Go over your lines and your dune is done!
