How to Draw a Diesel Locomotive

Draw a diesel locomotive in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: long hood.

Step 1: Long hood
Right of the middle, draw a long low box, wider than tall, with the front right corner rounded off.
Tip A diesel is a long low box with a taller cab at one end.
Step 2: Tall cab
At the back of the hood, draw a taller box with rounded top corners. Lay a thin roof on top.
Step 3: Face and lamp
On the nose, draw a big round face with air around it. Put a small lamp in the top corner.
Step 4: Eyes and smile
In the circle, draw 2 round eyes with black dots and shines, and a wide smile under them.
Step 5: Windows and horn
In the cab, draw 2 tall windows side by side. Put a little horn on the roof.
Step 6: Stripes and handrail
Rule 3 thin stripes along the hood, stopping before the face. Rule a handrail from the cab to the nose.
Tip Keep the stripes thin, level and the same length.
Step 7: Stack and grille
Put a square stack on the hood. Beside it, just under the top, draw a low grille with 2 bars.
Step 8: Frame and bumper
Under the engine, draw a long thin frame poking out past both ends. Add a round bumper on the nose.
Step 9: Wheels and rail
Under the frame, draw 2 blocks, each with 2 wheels and hubs. Rule a rail under them, past the frame.
Step 10: Yellow lamp, pink cheeks
Go over your lines. Colour the lamp and bumper yellow, add 2 pink cheeks, and leave the eyes white.
Step 11: Sky windows, orange engine
Colour the windows sky blue. Colour the hood and cab orange, around the windows, lamp, face, grille and stripes.
Step 12: Dark grey frame
Colour the frame, the 2 blocks, the 4 wheels and the grille dark grey.
Step 13: Navy stripes and roof
Colour the 3 stripes, the roof, the horn and the stack navy blue. Ready to haul!
