How to Draw a Coal Mine
Draw a coal mine in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: ground and hill.
Step 1: Ground and hill
Draw a ground line. On it draw a big hill with a smaller hump, starting and stopping at its ends.
Tip The hill is the biggest shape, so let it nearly fill your page.
Step 2: Two posts
Left of the middle, start on the ground. Draw 2 tall posts leaning in, each stopping on the ground.
Tip Leave a wide gap between the posts. That gap is the way in.
Step 3: Top beam
Lay a long flat beam across the tops of the 2 posts, sticking out a little each side.
Step 4: The cart
Right of the posts draw a tub like a flowerpot, wider at the top. Leave a gap under it.
Tip A mine cart is a tub on wheels that carries the coal out.
Step 5: The rim
Start on the tub's left wall near the top. Draw a line straight across, stopping on the right wall.
Step 6: Two wheels
Under the tub draw 2 round wheels sitting on the ground line. Add a small circle in each.
Step 7: Coal lumps
Along the top of the tub draw 3 pointy lumps of coal peeping over, the middle one biggest.
Tip Coal lumps have flat sides and corners, not round bumps.
Step 8: Rail and sleepers
Under the ground line draw 6 flat sleepers in a row. Now the line is a rail.
Tip Sleepers are the flat wooden blocks a rail sits on.
Step 9: Cracks in the rock
Start on the hill's edge 3 times. Draw a short zigzag crack each time, stopping inside the rock.
Step 10: Stone hill
Colour the hill stone grey. Go around the posts, the beam, the opening and the cart.
Tip Colour lightly so the cracks still show.
Step 11: Brown wood
Colour the 2 posts, the beam, the rim of the tub and the 6 sleepers brown.
Step 12: Grey tub
Colour the tub under its rim dark grey. Colour the middles of the 2 wheels dark grey too.
Step 13: Black coal
Colour the opening, the 3 lumps of coal and the 2 wheels black. Go over your lines!
