How to Draw a Closed Book

12 steps · Medium · about 9 min

Draw a closed book in 12 easy steps, about 9 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: front cover.

Print

  1. Step 1: Front cover

In the middle of your paper draw a tall rectangle with rounded corners, taller than wide.

Tip Make it tall like a door, not square.

  2. Step 2: The spine

Down the left side of the cover draw a narrow upright strip, the same height as the cover.

  3. Step 3: Two big eyes

On the cover draw 2 big egg eyes. Colour a black dot in each, leaving a white shine.

  4. Step 4: Smile and cheeks

Under the eyes draw a U smile from eye to eye. Add a small flat oval cheek beside each end.

  5. Step 5: The pages

Behind the cover draw a second rectangle peeking out a little to the right and below, for the pages.

  6. Step 6: Page lines

From the top of the page edge, draw 2 thin lines down the side and along the bottom.

  7. Step 7: Title box

Near the top of the cover draw a small wide title box with 2 lines inside.

  8. Step 8: Ribbon and spine marks

On top of the cover draw a ribbon poking up with a V notch. Add 2 short spine lines.

  9. Step 9: Sparkles, floor and shadow

Add 4 sparkles in the air. Draw a floor line under the book from left to right, and a shadow.

  10. Step 10: Pages and ribbon

Go over your lines. Colour the page edges cream and the ribbon yellow.

  11. Step 11: Cheeks and shadow

Colour the cheeks pink and the shadow grey.

  12. Step 12: Red cover, navy spine

Colour the cover red around the cheeks and the spine navy, leaving the title box and eyes white. Story time!
