How to Draw a Cassowary

13 steps · Medium · about 10 min

Draw a cassowary in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: a small round head.

Print

  1. Step 1: A small round head

Near the top left, draw a small round head, wider than tall. Start and stop underneath, leaving a gap.

Tip Leave room above the head for a tall helmet.

  2. Step 2: Tall helmet

From the forehead, draw a tall helmet leaning back, stopping on the head. Rub out the head line inside.

  3. Step 3: Short pointed beak

From the front of the head, draw a short pointed beak curving down to a tip, back to the chin.

  4. Step 4: One big eye

Behind the beak, draw a big round eye. Fill it with a black dot, leaving a white shine.

  5. Step 5: Neck and wattle

From the gap, draw 2 neck lines like an S, stopping 2 heads below. Hang a wattle from the throat.

  6. Step 6: Big round body

Start at the front of the tummy. Draw up the chest, over a big round back. Stop near the bottom.

  7. Step 7: Shaggy feathers and tail

From where the back stopped, draw soft floppy bumps round the bottom, ending at the tummy. Add 5 hanging strokes.

  8. Step 8: One long leg

Under the front of the tummy, draw a leg, thick at the top, bending back, ending in 3 big toes.

  9. Step 9: The other long leg

A hand further back, draw the second leg the same way, with 3 big toes on the ground.

  10. Step 10: Ground and grass

Start at the left edge. Draw a long ground line to the right edge, hopping over the feet. Add grass.

  11. Step 11: Tan helmet, grey legs

Colour the tall helmet tan. Colour both legs and their toes light grey.

  12. Step 12: Blue neck, red wattle

Colour the head and neck bright blue, leaving the eye white. Colour the little wattle red.

  13. Step 13: Dark body and beak

Colour the big shaggy body and the beak dark slate grey.
