How to Draw a Camera Lens
Draw a camera lens in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the front ring.
Step 1: The front ring
On the left draw a tall oval, twice as tall as it is wide.
Tip This is the round front of the lens, seen from the side.
Step 2: Front barrel
From the oval's top and bottom draw 2 short lines right. Join their ends with a curve bulging right.
Tip The curve copies the right side of your oval.
Step 3: Middle barrel
Start on that curve, a little in from each end. Draw 2 long lines right, joined by a curve.
Tip Keep the top line and the bottom line level.
Step 4: The back end
Start on the new curve, a little in again. Draw 2 short lines right and join them with a curve.
Step 5: Inner ring
Inside the first oval draw a second tall oval, a little in from the edge.
Step 6: The glass
Inside that draw a third, smaller tall oval for the glass.
Tip Keep all 3 ovals the same shape, one inside the next.
Step 7: Thin ring
On the front barrel draw one more curve from the top line down to the bottom line, near its end.
Tip It runs side by side with the barrel's end curve.
Step 8: Grip band
On the middle barrel draw 2 curves from the top line down to the bottom line, a finger apart.
Step 9: Grip lines
Between those 2 curves draw 7 short lines across, from one curve to the other.
Tip Put them closer together near the top and the bottom.
Step 10: Shine and ground
In the glass draw 2 short curved shines at the top left. Draw a long ground line under the lens.
Step 11: Sky glass, grey grip
Go over your lines. Colour the glass sky blue. Colour the grip band and the back end light grey.
Step 12: Red ring, blue ring
Colour the thin ring on the barrel red. Colour the ring around the glass dark blue.
Step 13: Dark grey barrel
Colour the rest of the lens dark grey: the front ring and the barrel. Your camera lens is done!
