How to Draw a Butterfly
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: big round head.
Step 1: Big round head
A bit above the middle, draw a big soft egg head, a little wider than tall.
Tip Leave room on both sides for the wings and room on top for antennae.
Step 2: Two big eyes
Below the middle of the head, draw 2 big egg eyes, a finger apart. Fill them black with a shine.
Step 3: Smile and cheeks
Under the eyes, draw a little U smile. Add a small round cheek under each eye.
Tip Keep the cheeks well inside the head so white shows all round.
Step 4: Teardrop body
Start under the left of the head. Draw a chest bump, then a plump teardrop tummy, stopping under the right.
Step 5: Three stripes
Across the tummy, draw 3 little smile curves, one under the other, from edge to edge.
Step 6: Big top wings
Start on the left of the chest. Draw a big rounded wing up past the head, back to the tummy.
Step 7: Bottom wings
Start halfway along the bottom of each top wing. Draw a smaller round fan back to the tummy.
Step 8: Curly antennae
Start on top of the head, left of the middle. Draw a long lazy S ending in a small ball.
Step 9: Wing spots
In each top wing, draw a big oval spot and a small dot up top. One spot per bottom wing.
Step 10: Bumpy wing edges
Along the outside edge of each wing, draw 3 little U bumps inside the wing, from corner to corner.
Step 11: Yellow spots, pink cheeks
Go over your lines. Colour the spots and bumps yellow and the cheeks pink. Leave the eyes white.
Step 12: Orange wings, purple body
Colour the wings orange around the yellow. Colour the head, body and antenna balls purple around the cheeks and eyes.
