How to Draw a Bug Jar

13 steps · Tricky · about 10 min

Draw a bug jar in 13 steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the jar.

Print

  1. Step 1: The jar

Draw a tall glass jar with rounded corners, standing on a table line. Put a flat lid on top.

Tip The lid is a little wider than the jar. The bug goes inside.

  2. Step 2: Ladybug head

Inside the jar, a little above the middle, draw a small round head.

  3. Step 3: Eyes and smile

In the head, draw 2 big eyes with a black dot and shine in each. Add a small open smile.

  4. Step 4: Two antennae

From the top of the head, draw 2 short curved antennae up to tiny round balls.

  5. Step 5: The shell

Start at one side of the head. Draw a big round shell under it, back up to the other side.

Tip The shell is wider than the head and round at the bottom.

  6. Step 6: Line and spots

Draw a line straight down the middle of the shell. Draw 3 round spots on each side of the line.

  7. Step 7: Front legs

On each side of the shell, draw a short bent leg reaching out and down, ending in a ball foot.

  8. Step 8: Middle and back legs

Under the front legs, draw 2 more bent legs on each side, each with a ball foot. 6 legs!

  9. Step 9: The leaf

Under the feet, draw a leaf with a round end, a pointed tip and a stem. Add a middle vein.

  10. Step 10: Air holes and shine

Poke 3 air holes in the lid. Down the left side of the glass, draw a short shine line.

Tip Air holes in the lid so the bug can breathe.

  11. Step 11: Blue glass, green leaf

Colour the glass light blue around the ladybug and leaf. Colour the leaf green.

  12. Step 12: Red shell, pink cheeks

Colour the shell and mouth red, around the spots, and the cheeks pink. Leave the eyes white.

  13. Step 13: Black head, grey lid

Colour the head, spots, antenna balls and 6 legs black, around the eyes, cheeks and smile. Colour the lid grey.
