How to Draw a Bird

12 steps · Medium · about 9 min

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: round head.

Print

  1. Step 1: Round head

Near the top left, draw a big round head, wider than tall, with 3 soft low puffs on top.

Tip The tuft is 3 gentle hills, not spikes. Leave room below for the body.

  2. Step 2: Stubby beak

Start on the head's front. Draw a fat triangle beak out to a point and back. Add a mouth line.

Tip Keep the beak short and fat, not a long bill.

  3. Step 3: One big eye

Behind the beak, a finger back, draw a big round eye with a big black dot and a white shine.

  4. Step 4: Plump body

Start behind the head. Draw down to the rump, round a fat belly, and up the chest to the beak.

Tip A plump egg hanging under the head, narrower than the head.

  5. Step 5: Fan tail

Start on the rump. Draw a fan tail down and back, round the end, to the tummy. Add feather lines.

  6. Step 6: Folded wing

Start under the head. Draw a wing line, round at the front, stopping at the rump. Add 2 feather lines.

  7. Step 7: Front leg and toes

Start on the tummy's front. Draw a skinny leg down to 3 chubby curling toes, back up to the tummy.

Tip Toes like chubby fingers gripping the branch: 2 forward, 1 back.

  8. Step 8: Back leg and toes

A thumb behind the first leg, draw a second leg and toes the same way.

  9. Step 9: The branch

From the left edge, draw a branch top, hopping over the toes, up a twig, round the end, and back.

  10. Step 10: Cream chest, orange beak

Colour the chest and tummy cream, chin to tail. Colour the beak, legs and toes orange.

  11. Step 11: Blue head

Colour the head blue. Leave the eye white.

  12. Step 12: Navy wing, brown branch

Colour the wing and fan tail navy, a darker blue. Colour the branch brown. Your bird is done!
