How to Draw a Basset Hound

13 steps · Medium · about 10 min

Draw a basset hound in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: big head.

Print

  1. Step 1: Big head

Near the top of your paper, draw a big oval head, a little wider than tall. Make it big!

Tip The head is almost half of the whole basset hound.

  2. Step 2: Extra-long ears

Start high on the head's left. Draw a long floppy ear past the chin, in to the cheek. Same right.

Tip Basset hound ears are the longest: soft and velvety.

  3. Step 3: Big droopy muzzle

Low in the head, draw a big oval muzzle near the chin. Add a black triangle nose on top.

  4. Step 4: Face stripe

From the head top, draw 2 lines down the middle of the face, a finger apart, stopping on the muzzle.

  5. Step 5: Two big eyes

Draw 2 egg eyes on the middle of the head, either side of the stripe. Add black dots and shines.

  6. Step 6: Smile and tongue

From the nose, draw a short line down to a w smile. Hang a small U tongue from its middle.

  7. Step 7: The body

Start under each ear. Draw a short line down to near the bottom. Join them across with a soft curve.

Tip The body is a bit wider than the head.

  8. Step 8: White chest

Start low on the left ear. Draw a big U across the chest and stop on the right ear.

  9. Step 9: Short front legs

Start low on the chest. Draw 2 short U legs down to round paws and back up. Add toe lines.

  10. Step 10: Back paws and ground

Add hill paws with toe lines at both bottom corners. Draw a ground line under the paws, side to side.

  11. Step 11: Curvy tail

From the body above the right back paw, draw a banana tail curving up. Add a line near its tip.

Tip Make it thick, and keep a gap between the tail and the long ear.

  12. Step 12: Pink tongue, ginger coat

Colour the tongue pink, then the head, body sides and tail ginger. Leave the eyes and the stripe white.

Tip Keep the muzzle, chest, legs, paws and tail tip white too.

  13. Step 13: Brown ears

Colour the 2 long ears brown, right up to the head. Your basset hound is done!
