How to Draw a Barn Owl

11 steps · Medium · about 8 min

Draw a barn owl in 11 easy steps, about 8 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: domed head.

Print

  1. Step 1: Domed head

Near the top, draw a big soft egg head on its side, wider than tall, with a round dome.

    Tip No corners anywhere.

  2. Step 2: Heart face

Start at the top of the face. Draw a C down each side, ending in a point at the chin.

Tip The heart fills almost the whole face.

  3. Step 3: Two dark eyes

Inside the heart, across the middle, draw 2 big round eyes a thumb apart. Colour them black, leaving white shines.

Tip Barn owl eyes are shiny black buttons.

  4. Step 4: The beak

Between the eyes, a little lower, draw a chunky teardrop beak hanging point down.

  5. Step 5: Plump body

Start under each cheek. Draw a big C down each side, fattest low down. They meet in a round bottom.

Tip Narrower than the head, like a plump egg tucked under it.

  6. Step 6: Folded wings

Start on each body line under the head. Draw a fat leaf wing bowing in, ending near the bottom.

  7. Step 7: Speckled tummy

Between the wings, under the head, dot a few little speckles on the tummy, like sprinkles.

  8. Step 8: The branch

Near the left edge, start a long wobbly branch under the tummy, ending in a round tip. Add a twig.

  9. Step 9: Two gripping feet

Under each eye, draw a foot from the tummy down onto the branch, with 3 round toes gripping it.

  10. Step 10: Sand beak, tan rim

Colour the beak and feet sand. Colour the head rim tan, leaving the heart face white.

  11. Step 11: Golden wings, brown branch

Go over your lines. Colour the wings golden brown and the branch dark brown. The tummy stays white.
