How to Draw an American Foxhound

13 steps · Medium · about 10 min

Draw an American foxhound in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: big soft head.

Print

  1. Step 1: Big soft head

Near the top left draw a big soft head, a little wider than tall, with round cheeks.

Tip The head is almost as long as the body. Leave room on the right.

  2. Step 2: Long floppy ears

From each top corner of the head draw a long floppy ear. The right one hangs past the chin.

Tip Hound ears are long, soft and round at the bottom.

  3. Step 3: Big eyes

On the middle of the head, a little to the left, draw 2 big oval eyes with black dots.

Tip Leave a tiny white shine in each eye.

  4. Step 4: Snout and smile

Under the left eye draw a big snout past the chin. From its black nose, draw down to a w.

Tip Rub out the head line inside the snout.

  5. Step 5: Long back

Start on the right ear, beside the eyes. Draw a long back, curl round the bottom, stop below the chin.

Tip The line dips down the neck, then runs almost flat.

  6. Step 6: Front leg

Draw a ground line. From under the chin, draw a long leg down to a plump paw, then back up.

Tip The leg gets thinner near the paw.

  7. Step 7: Tummy and back leg

From the front leg draw the tummy. Then a round thigh down to a paw and up to the bottom.

Tip The back leg bends just above the paw.

  8. Step 8: Far legs

Under the tummy draw 2 more legs peeking out: one leaning back, one leaning forward.

Tip Only part of each far leg shows. All 4 paws sit on the ground.

  9. Step 9: Toes

On each big paw draw 2 short curved toe lines. Draw 1 on each small paw.

  10. Step 10: Tail held up

Start on top of the bottom. Draw a thick tail up to a thin tip. Add a line across it.

Tip A foxhound carries its tail high, like a flag.

  11. Step 11: Saddle line

Start on the back, behind the ear. Draw a curve dipping across the body and stop on the bottom.

Tip The patch above this line is the saddle.

  12. Step 12: Tan and brown

Colour the head and tail tan and both ears brown. Leave the eyes, snout and tail tip white.

  13. Step 13: Colour the saddle black

Colour the saddle on the back black. Leave the legs, chest, tummy and tail tip white.
