How to Draw an Alley

Draw an alley in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: a big box.

Step 1: A big box
Draw a big box that nearly fills your page, a bit taller than it is wide.
Tip Everything else goes inside this box.
Step 2: The gap
Start on the top of the box, near the middle. Draw 2 lines straight down, stopping above the bottom.
Tip Keep the 2 lines a thumb apart. The gap is the far end of the alley.
Step 3: The ground
Join the bottoms of the 2 lines. From each bottom draw a line down to the box's nearest corner.
Tip Now there are 2 tall walls with a path between them.
Step 4: A house far away
In the gap draw a flat roof line from one wall across to the other. Add a small window below.
Step 5: High windows
Draw 2 windows high on each wall. Slant their tops and bottoms down towards the gap.
Tip The window nearer the gap is smaller, because it is further away.
Step 6: The back door
From the left wall's bottom edge draw a door up, across and back down to the edge. Add a knob.
Tip The top of the door slants down a little, like the windows.
Step 7: A bin
By the right wall draw a bin on the ground: a tub, a flat lid and a little handle.
Tip The tub is a little wider at the top than at the bottom.
Step 8: Little bricks
Draw 2 little bricks on each wall, slanted like the windows.
Step 9: Paving lines
Draw 2 flat lines across the ground from wall to wall. The far one is shorter.
Step 10: Blue and cream
Go over your lines. Colour the sky and all 5 windows sky blue. Colour the far house cream.
Step 11: Grey and tan
Colour the ground grey and the right wall tan, around the bin. Go over the little bricks.
Step 12: Red brick wall
Colour the left wall brick red, around its windows and the door.
Step 13: Door and bin
Colour the door green and the bin dark grey. Your alley is done!
