How to Draw a Woodpecker
Draw a woodpecker in 12 easy steps, about 9 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: round head.
Step 1: Round head
Near the top draw a big round head with 3 soft puffs on top at the back.
Step 2: Long straight beak
From the head front draw a long pointy beak. Add a line from its tip back to the head.
Step 3: Big eye
Behind the beak draw a big round eye with a big black dot and a little shine.
Step 4: Cap and neck band
Draw a cap line across the head top. From its back end curve a line down to the head bottom.
Step 5: Plump body
From the back of the head draw a curve down, round a belly, and up to the chin.
Tip The body is narrower than the head, so the head stays big.
Step 6: Fan tail
From the back end draw a fan pointing down and back, wide at the end. Add 2 feather lines.
Step 7: Wing
From under the head draw a big wing curve down the side, ending on the back by the tail.
Step 8: Tree
On the left draw a tall trunk with 2 bark lines. From near its bottom draw a long branch.
Step 9: Legs and toes
Under the tummy draw 2 short legs side by side, each with 3 chubby toes curling over the branch.
Step 10: Red cap, grey legs
Colour the cap red, and the beak and legs grey. Leave the head, chest and eye white.
Step 11: Brown tree
Colour the trunk and the branch brown, around the grey toes.
Step 12: Dark wing and tail
Colour the tail dark grey. Colour the wing and neck band black, leaving 3 white spots.
