How to Draw a Sage Grouse
Draw a sage grouse in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the head.
Step 1: The head
Near the top left draw a big round head, a little wider than tall. Add a tiny chin bump.
Tip Leave room on the right and below for the body.
Step 2: Beak and throat
Draw a short fat beak on the front. From its bottom, draw a throat line back to the head's bottom.
Step 3: Eye and comb
Draw a big round eye with a black dot and white speck. Add a little curved comb on top.
Step 4: Plump body
Start on the back of the head. Draw a plump egg body hanging down and stop under the beak.
Tip Keep the body narrower than the head, so the head stays big.
Step 5: 2 chest sacs
On the front of the chest draw 2 big round balloons side by side, poking out past the chest.
Tip The yellow sacs puff up when the grouse shows off.
Step 6: Spiky fan tail
Behind the body draw 6 long pointy tail feathers fanning out like a crown, from straight up to pointing back.
Step 7: Folded wing
Start under the head. Curve a big wing down and round to the back, and stop by the tail.
Step 8: Front leg and toes
Start on the tummy. Draw a short thin leg with 3 slim toes, then go back up to the tummy.
Step 9: Back leg and toes
Draw the other leg the same way, a hand further back. Both feet sit at the same height.
Tip Leave a gap between the 2 feet.
Step 10: Ground and grass
Start at the left edge. Draw a ground line under the toes to the right edge. Add some grass.
Step 11: Yellow and tan
Colour the comb and the 2 chest sacs yellow. Colour the legs and toes tan.
Step 12: Brown head and wing
Colour the head, wing and 6 tail spikes brown, around the eye, the yellow comb and the throat.
Step 13: Black beak and throat
Colour the beak and the throat patch black. Leave the eye and the chest white.
