How to Draw a Velvet Ant

13 steps · Medium · about 10 min

Draw a velvet ant in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the head.

Print

  1. Step 1: The head

Near the top draw a big egg head with round cheeks and a smaller chin. Leave lots of room below.

Tip An ant is 3 beads in a row: big head, small middle, big bottom.

  2. Step 2: Bent feelers

From the top of the head draw 2 feelers up, then bend each one out to a little ball.

Tip Ant feelers are bent like an elbow, not straight.

  3. Step 3: Two big eyes

Across the middle of the head draw 2 big egg eyes, a gap between. Colour a black dot in each.

  4. Step 4: Smile and cheeks

Under the eyes draw a wide open smile, flat on top, U underneath. Add a round cheek each side.

  5. Step 5: The middle bead

Under the chin draw a small round ball tucked behind the head, as wide as the gap between the cheeks.

  6. Step 6: A big fuzzy bottom

Under the middle bead draw a big fuzzy egg as wide as the head, with soft bumps along its edges.

Tip A velvet ant is really a wasp in a furry coat.

  7. Step 7: Two dark bands

Across the fuzzy bottom draw 2 bands, each 2 smile lines close together from edge to edge.

  8. Step 8: Front legs

From each side of the middle bead draw a leg out to a knee, then down to a foot.

Tip Each leg is thick at the body and thin at the foot, with a little toe turned out.

  9. Step 9: Middle legs

Under the front legs draw a leg each side, out to a knee and down to a foot.

  10. Step 10: Back legs

Between the 2 bands draw the last leg each side, out to a knee and down to a foot.

  11. Step 11: Pink cheeks

Colour the 2 round cheeks pink.

  12. Step 12: Red coat and mouth

Colour the middle bead, the open mouth and the fuzzy bottom bright red, around the 2 bands.

  13. Step 13: Slate head and legs

Colour the head, bands, legs and feeler balls slate, around the cheeks and mouth. Leave the eyes white. Done!
