How to Draw a Stonefish
Draw a stonefish in 14 easy steps, about 11 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: big soft mound.
Step 1: Big soft mound
A little below the middle draw a big soft mound with a flat bottom, wider than tall.
Step 2: Happy smile
Start on the front edge, low down. Draw a long smile that curves up and stops before the middle.
Step 3: Big eye on top
Above the smile, near the front of the top, draw one big round eye with a black dot and shine.
Tip The eye sits up high, so it can peek out of the sand.
Step 4: Row of spines
Start on the back behind the eye. Draw a row of 5 short spikes and stop near the far end.
Tip Short and pointy, like a little crown. These spines are dangerous!
Step 5: Big fan side fin
Low on the side, behind the smile, draw a fan fin like a half leaf. Add 2 curved rays.
Step 6: Tail and warts
Start on the right end, draw a small paddle tail and stop lower down. Dot 2 warts on the back.
Step 7: Blotches
On the back half draw 3 wobbly pebble blotches: one on top, one in the middle, one near the tail.
Tip Keep every blotch inside the lump, with a little gap between them.
Step 8: Sandy floor
Start near the left edge. Draw a long wavy sand line along the flat bottom, stopping near the right edge.
Step 9: Look-alike rock
Right of the tail, leave a gap and draw a round rock sitting on the sand line.
Tip The rock is the joke: the stonefish looks just like it.
Step 10: Tall weed
Left of the fish, leave a gap and draw one tall wavy weed leaf standing on the sand.
Step 11: Bubbles
Above the eye draw 3 bubbles floating up, each one bigger than the last.
Step 12: Blue bubbles, sandy floor
Colour the bubbles light blue and the floor under the sand line sandy yellow.
Step 13: Green weed, grey rock
Colour the weed green and the rock grey.
Step 14: Brown stonefish
Colour the lump and fin brown, leaving the eye and blotches white. Colour the blotches, spines and tail dark brown.
