How to Draw a Racehorse

14 steps · Medium · about 11 min

Draw a racehorse in 14 easy steps, about 11 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: horse's head.

Print

  1. Step 1: Horse's head

On the left, draw a long head like a fat sock, with the nose pointing down to the left.

Tip A horse has a long face. Make it wider at the top.

  2. Step 2: Eye and nose

Draw a big round eye and a nostril. For the smile, start under the nostril and stop near the cheek.

Tip Leave the eye white around the black dot.

  3. Step 3: Two ears

On top of the head, draw 2 pointed ears leaning back. The far one peeks out behind.

  4. Step 4: Neck and back

Start behind the ears. Draw the neck and long back. Stop under the rump. Add the chest line.

Tip The neck stretches forward because the horse is racing.

  5. Step 5: Front legs

Start at the chest. Draw 2 legs reaching forward, each with a hoof. Stop where the tummy begins.

Tip Each leg bends a little at the knee and gets thinner.

  6. Step 6: Tummy and back legs

Start behind the front legs. Draw the tummy and 2 back legs with hooves, up to the rump. Add ground.

Tip The back hooves push off the ground line.

  7. Step 7: Mane and tail

Start behind the ears and draw 3 soft bumps of mane. Stop halfway down the neck. Add a streaming tail.

  8. Step 8: Number cloth

On the horse's side, draw a square cloth hanging from the back. Write a 7 on it.

Tip Every racehorse wears a number.

  9. Step 9: Jockey's body

On the back, draw a bean leaning forward for the jacket. Draw a bent bean for the bottom and leg.

Tip A jockey crouches low. Rub out the horse's back line inside.

  10. Step 10: Head and cap

Above the jacket's front, draw a round head. Add a cap with a peak, 2 dot eyes and a smile.

  11. Step 11: Arm and boot

Draw an arm from the shoulder down to a round hand on the neck. Draw a boot under the knee.

  12. Step 12: Peach and blue

Colour the jockey's face and hand peach. Colour the cap, jacket and arm blue.

  13. Step 13: Brown horse

Colour the horse brown, around the jockey. Leave the eye, the breeches, the boot and the cloth white.

  14. Step 14: Black and grey

Go over your lines. Colour the 4 hooves grey. Colour the mane, tail and boot black.
