How to Draw a Matchbox

14 steps · Medium · about 11 min

Draw a matchbox in 14 easy steps, about 11 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: front of the sleeve.

Print

  1. Step 1: Front of the sleeve

Low on the left of your paper draw a long thin box.

Tip Leave room on the right for the drawer.

  2. Step 2: Top of the sleeve

From its 2 top corners draw slanted lines up to the right. Join their ends with a long line.

Tip Keep the 2 slanted lines the same length and the same lean.

  3. Step 3: The drawer

From the right end of the first box draw a shorter box sticking out, just as tall.

  4. Step 4: Drawer top and end

Slant 2 lines up from the drawer's right corners, like before. Join them across the top and down the end.

  5. Step 5: Inside the drawer

Inside the drawer's top draw a smaller slanted box. Start and stop on the sleeve's edge.

Tip This is the tray the matches lie in.

  6. Step 6: Match sticks

Draw 3 lines along the tray, starting at the sleeve and stopping before the end. That makes 4 sticks.

  7. Step 7: Match heads

At the end of each stick draw a little oval head. Count them: 4.

  8. Step 8: Striking strip

On the front of the sleeve draw a long thin box, a little smaller than the front.

Tip You rub a match along this rough strip to light it.

  9. Step 9: Label and flame

On top of the sleeve draw a slanted label box. Inside it draw a teardrop flame.

  10. Step 10: The table

Draw a table line level with the bottom of the box, sticking out on both sides.

  11. Step 11: Yellow and cream

Go over your lines. Colour the flame yellow. Colour the label and the drawer cream.

  12. Step 12: Tan sticks

Colour the match sticks light brown, around the heads.

  13. Step 13: Red heads

Colour the 4 match heads red.

  14. Step 14: Blue and brown

Colour the sleeve blue around the label, and the striking strip brown. Your matchbox is ready!
