How to Draw a Massachusetts Map

Step 1: The top edge

Start high on the left. Draw a long straight line to the right. Stop past the middle.

Tip Massachusetts is long and low, with a curly arm on the right.

Step 2: The top corner

Carry on from there. Curve a line up to the right. Stop at a corner, the highest place.

Step 3: The bumpy coast

From the corner, go down, out round a small bump, then slant down left. Stop at a dip.

Tip The dip is the harbour of Boston, the biggest city.

Step 4: Down the coast

From the dip, curve a line down to the right. Stop when it is as long as the bumpy coast.

Step 5: The curly arm

Carry on from there to the right, then curl up and back left like a hook. Stop at the tip.

Tip This arm of land is Cape Cod. It looks like a bent arm.

Step 6: Round the arm

From the tip, draw round the outside of the arm, down to a corner. Then draw a line left.

Tip Keep the arm thin, with a gap between your 2 lines.

Step 7: The bay

From there, go up a little. Then draw a line slanting down to the left. Stop at a corner.

Step 8: The step up

From the corner, draw a straight line up, a short step left, then up again. Stop there.

Step 9: Bottom and side

Carry on from there. Draw a long straight line left. Then go up, leaning right, to join the start.

Step 10: Two islands

Under the curly arm, draw 2 small islands: a long one, then a tiny one on the right.

Step 11: The capital star

Beside the dip in the coast, draw a star for the capital city, Boston.

Tip On a map, a star shows the capital city.

Step 12: A mountain

Near the left end, draw a little triangle mountain.

Tip The Berkshire hills are at this end of the state.

Step 13: Green land

Go over your lines. Colour the land and the 2 islands green, around the star and the mountain.

Step 14: Brown and red

Colour the mountain brown and the star red. Your map of Massachusetts is done!
