How to Draw a Lionfish

13 steps · Medium · about 10 min

Draw a lionfish in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: egg body.

Print

  1. Step 1: Egg body

Start at the back end, draw a big egg round the front, and stop just below where you started.

Tip Leave a small gap at the back end for the tail.

  2. Step 2: Eye and smile

Draw a big eye near the front, with a dot and shine. From the front, add a small smile.

Tip Keep the eye above the middle, not touching the edge.

  3. Step 3: Round tail

In the gap at the back, draw a round fan tail from the top end to the bottom end.

  4. Step 4: Long spines

From the back above the eye, draw 7 tall thin spines joined by low scoops, ending near the tail.

Tip Make the middle spines the tallest, and keep the scoops low near the back.

  5. Step 5: Feathery fan

Behind the eye, low down, draw a big fan spreading back and down, with 5 soft points and 3 lines.

Tip The lines start near the fan's round end and spread out to the points.

  6. Step 6: Second fan

In front of the big fan, draw a smaller fan peeking out under the tummy, with 3 soft points.

  7. Step 7: Bold bands

Behind the eye, draw 4 bold bands from the back to the tummy, as wide as the gaps between.

Tip Each band is 2 lines. Stop the lines where they meet the fan.

  8. Step 8: Two bubbles

In front of the face, draw 2 bubbles floating up, the top one bigger.

  9. Step 9: Sand and seaweed

Draw a wavy sand line from edge to edge. Grow a tall wavy seaweed blade from it on each side.

  10. Step 10: Cream body

Colour the body cream between the bands, but not the fans. Leave the eye white.

  11. Step 11: Peach fins

Colour the tail, the spines and both fans peach.

  12. Step 12: Sand and bubbles

Colour the sand sandy and the bubbles light blue.

  13. Step 13: Red bands, green seaweed

Colour the bands red and the seaweed green. Your lionfish is done!
