How to Draw a Horse Running
Draw a horse running in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the head.
Step 1: The head
Near the top left draw a sideways head like a fat peanut: big round cheek, smaller nose end.
Tip The nose end leans down to the left. Leave lots of room on the right.
Step 2: Eye and nose
Draw 1 big eye. From the nose top, curve a line down to the chin. Add a nostril and smile.
Tip Give the eye a black dot and a white shine. Only 1 eye: we see the side.
Step 3: The ears
On top of the head draw a pointed leaf ear with a smaller leaf inside, and a second ear behind.
Tip The far ear peeks out from behind the near one.
Step 4: The neck
Behind the ear, curve the neck's back line down to the right. From under the cheek, draw the front down.
Tip The neck is thick and gets wider as it goes down.
Step 5: Back and bottom
Carry on from the neck's back line. Draw a long back, curl round the bottom and stop.
Tip The back dips a little. The bottom is big and round.
Step 6: The mane
Start with a tuft in front of the ear. Draw fat locks down the neck. Stop at the shoulders.
Tip Each lock tucks behind the one above, like roof tiles.
Step 7: Reaching front leg
Start at the chest. Draw a leg reaching forward to a hoof, then back under it. Stop under the mane.
Tip The leg bends at the knee and gets thinner. The hoof is a little doorstop.
Step 8: Kicking back leg
Start at the front leg. Draw the tummy, then a thigh kicking back to a hoof. Stop at the bottom.
Tip The back leg is wide at the top and bends halfway down.
Step 9: The far legs
Behind each leg draw another leg peeking out. Then draw a ground line under the back hooves.
Tip Only draw the part you can see. The far legs hide behind the near ones.
Step 10: Streaming tail
From the top of the bottom draw a long wavy tail flying out to a point. Add a hair line.
Tip Thick where it grows from the bottom, pointed at the tip.
Step 11: Nose and ears
Go over your lines. Colour the nose patch cream and the ear insides peach. Leave the eye white.
Step 12: Colour it tan
Colour the head, ears, neck, body and legs tan, around the cream nose and peach ear insides.
Step 13: Mane, tail and hooves
Colour the mane and tail brown and the hooves dark grey. Your running horse is done!
