How to Draw a Hinge

10 steps · Medium · about 8 min

Draw a hinge in 10 easy steps, about 8 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: left plate.

Print

  1. Step 1: Left plate

On the left draw a tall box, twice as tall as wide, with soft corners on its left side.

Tip Stop the box just before the middle of your paper.

  2. Step 2: Right plate

Leave a thin gap, then draw the same tall box on the right, with soft corners on its right side.

  3. Step 3: The pin

Start on the left plate, draw a small hill over the gap, stop on the right. Add a dip underneath.

  4. Step 4: The knuckles

Draw 4 short lines across the gap, evenly spaced, from one plate to the other.

  5. Step 5: Left screws

On the left plate draw 3 round screws: top, middle and bottom. The middle one sits nearer the pin.

  6. Step 6: Right screws

Draw 3 matching round screws on the right plate, in the same places.

  7. Step 7: Screw slots

Draw a short flat line inside each screw, across its middle.

  8. Step 8: Grey screws

Go over your lines, then colour the 6 screws grey.

  9. Step 9: Golden plates

Colour both plates yellow like gold, going around the screws.

  10. Step 10: Orange pin

Colour the pin in the middle orange. Your hinge is ready to swing!
