How to Draw a Hagfish
Draw a hagfish in 11 easy steps, about 8 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the long body.
Step 1: The long body
Start at a round nose. Draw a long, even ribbon in 2 big waves to a rounded tail, and back.
Tip Keep it the same thickness nearly all the way, like a sausage.
Step 2: A little eye
Near the nose, above the middle, draw a round eye with a black dot and a shine.
Step 3: A smile
Under the eye, draw a short smile, starting near the nose and stopping below the eye.
Step 4: Three whiskers
On the nose draw 3 short fat whiskers with round tips, fanning out like fingers.
Tip A hagfish cannot see well. It feels its way with its whiskers.
Step 5: The tail fin
Start on the back, past the middle. Draw a thin fin round the tail, stopping under the belly.
Tip Keep the fin a thin band that follows the body.
Step 6: Slime dots
Along the side draw a row of 7 small dots, from behind the head towards the tail.
Tip A hagfish makes slime from little holes along its sides.
Step 7: The sea floor
Draw a wavy sand line, starting and stopping just inside the edges. Add a round rock at each end.
Tip Hagfish live on the deep, dark sea floor.
Step 8: Bubbles
Above the nose draw 3 round bubbles rising up, each a little bigger than the last.
Step 9: Sand and bubbles
Go over your lines. Colour the sand sandy right to the edges, and the 3 bubbles sky blue.
Step 10: Peach and grey
Colour the thin tail fin a light peach colour, and the 2 rocks grey.
Step 11: Colour it pink
Colour the body and the 3 whiskers pink, leaving the eye white. Your hagfish is done!
