How to Draw a Fox

12 steps · Medium · about 9 min

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: wide head.

Print

  1. Step 1: Wide head

Draw a big dome for the head. Add 2 fur tufts each side, then slope in to a pointy chin.

Tip Give each tuft a soft round end. Wide on top, narrow at the chin.

  2. Step 2: Tall ears

On each top corner of the head, draw a tall triangle ear leaning out. Draw a smaller triangle inside it.

Tip Fox ears are like 2 tents tipping away from each other.

  3. Step 3: Big eyes

Halfway down the head, draw 2 big round eyes, an eye apart. Add black pupils with shines.

Tip Big eyes make the fox look friendly.

  4. Step 4: Snout and nose

Under the eyes, draw a long teardrop snout past the chin. Near its tip, add a black nose and smile.

Tip The snout is what makes it a fox: long and pointy.

  5. Step 5: Chest and bib

Start under each fur tuft. Draw a short C chest, stopping a hand below the chin. Add a U bib.

Tip The bib is like a long white egg, narrower than the chest.

  6. Step 6: Ground and legs

Draw a ground line below the chest. From each chest line's bottom, draw a big C down to it.

Tip Each back leg is a fat rainbow on its side, poking past the chest.

  7. Step 7: Front legs

Start on each chest line. Draw a U down to a mitten paw, back up to the bib.

Tip Add 2 toes to each paw. The paw is wider than the leg.

  8. Step 8: Back paws

Start on each back leg near the ground. Draw a bun humping over to stop on the front paw.

Tip The back paw peeks out lower and flatter than the front paw.

  9. Step 9: Big bushy tail

From the right back leg, draw a fat tail sweeping up to a soft point, then down to the ground.

Tip The tail reaches up as high as the fur tufts and rests on the ground.

  10. Step 10: White tip

Near the top of the tail, start on the inside edge and draw one short curve across to the outside.

Tip The line bows a little toward the tip, like a cap on a brush.

  11. Step 11: White bits

With a white crayon, colour the snout, the bib and the tip of the tail. Leave the eyes white.

  12. Step 12: Orange fur, black tips

Go over your lines. Colour the fur orange around the white parts. Colour the ear tips black last.
