How to Draw Catching Fireflies
Draw catching fireflies in 20 steps, about 15 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: egg head.
Step 1: Egg head
Near the top of your paper, in the middle, draw an egg for the head.
Step 2: Eyes and nose
Just below the middle of the head, draw 2 big oval eyes with dots, and a small U nose.
Step 3: Smile and ears
Draw a smile under the nose. Add a C ear on each side, starting and stopping on the head.
Step 4: Baseball cap
Draw a round cap over the top of the head, a wide half-moon brim across the forehead and a button.
Step 5: The jar
A head's height below the chin, draw a tall jar with round corners, as wide as the face.
Step 6: Jar lid
Draw a flat lid sitting on top of the jar, a little narrower than the jar.
Step 7: Neck and T-shirt
Draw 2 neck lines. From them, draw a T-shirt with short sleeves down behind the jar, back to the neck.
Step 8: Arms and hands
Draw an arm down from each sleeve. Bend it in at the elbow to a round hand holding the jar.
Step 9: Trousers
Start at the hem's left end. Draw 2 trouser legs down behind the jar. Stop at the hem's right end.
Step 10: Sneakers and ground
Under each leg, draw a chunky sneaker with the toe pointing out. Draw a long ground line under the shoes.
Step 11: Firefly in the jar
Inside the jar draw an oval firefly body with a black dot head on top.
Tip Fireflies are little beetles. Their tails glow in the dark!
Step 12: Flying fireflies
Draw 3 more fireflies flying free, 2 on the left and 1 on the right: oval body, dot head.
Step 13: Little wings
Give every firefly 2 small oval wings, one on each side, starting behind the body.
Step 14: Glow lines
Under each firefly draw 3 short lines fanning out from its tail, to show it glowing.
Step 15: Crescent moon
In the top right corner draw a crescent moon: a big C with a smaller C inside, joined at tips.
Step 16: Yellow glow
Go over your lines. Colour every firefly body and the moon yellow.
Step 17: Peach skin, pink cheeks
Colour the face, ears, neck, arms and hands peach, with a pink cheek on each side. Leave the eyes white.
Step 18: Blue jar, grey lid
Colour the jar light blue around the firefly and the hands. Colour the lid grey.
Step 19: Green cap and shirt
Colour the cap and the T-shirt green, around the jar and the arms.
Step 20: Navy trousers
Colour the trousers navy blue around the jar. Leave the sneakers white. Your firefly catcher is done!
