How to Draw a Hen
Draw a hen in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.
Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: round head.
Step 1: Round head
Near the top, a little left of the middle, draw a big round head, a little wider than tall.
Tip Leave room above for the comb, and below for the body.
Step 2: Bumpy comb
Start on top of the head. Draw 3 round bumps, the middle one tallest, stopping on the head behind.
Tip Soft and round, like 3 little hills, not spiky.
Step 3: Beak and wattle
Start on the head's front. Draw a fat triangle beak out to a point and back. Add a wattle below.
Tip Keep the beak short and fat, with a mouth line splitting it.
Step 4: One big eye
Behind the beak, a finger back, draw a big round eye with a big black dot and a white shine.
Step 5: Plump body
Start behind the head. Draw down to the rump, round a fat belly, and up the chest to the beak.
Tip A plump egg hanging under the head, narrower than the head.
Step 6: Short fan tail
Start on the rump. Draw a short fan tail up and back, then down to the body. Add feather lines.
Step 7: Folded wing
Start under the head. Draw a round wing curving down and back, stopping on the back at the rump.
Step 8: Front leg and toes
Start under the tummy. Draw a thin leg down to 3 fanning toes and a tiny back toe, back up.
Tip Wide at the tummy, thin at the ankle. Leave little gaps between the toes.
Step 9: Back leg and toes
Draw the other leg the same way, a hand further back, so the two feet do not touch.
Step 10: Ground and grass
From the left edge, draw a ground line under the toes across to the right. Add a few grass tufts.
Step 11: Yellow beak, cream body
Colour the beak, legs and toes yellow. Colour the chest and tummy cream.
Step 12: Brown head, red comb
Colour the head light brown and leave the eye white. Colour the comb and wattle red.
Step 13: Dark wing and tail
Colour the wing and the fan tail dark brown. Your hen is done!
