How to Draw an Axolotl

Step 1: Big wide head

Near the top, draw a big wide head with fat cheeks and a flat chin. Make it wider than tall.

Tip The head is almost half the whole axolotl.

Step 2: Feathery gills

On each side of the head, draw 3 leaf gills pointing out, with a line up each middle.

Tip Rub out the head line inside the gills.

Step 3: Two round eyes

Below the middle of the head, draw 2 big round eyes far apart. Add black dots and white shines.

Step 4: Big happy smile

Start under the left eye. Draw a long U smile and stop under the right eye. Add 2 nose dots.

Tip Add a small round blush below and outside each eye.

Step 5: Pear body

Start under each cheek. Draw a big C down to meet at the bottom, like a pear under the head.

Tip The body is narrower than the head and round at the bottom.

Step 6: Curly tail

From the lower right side of the body, draw a thick tail that curls up to a round tip.

Tip Start both tail lines on the body line.

Step 7: Soft tail fin

Start under the tail. Draw a soft fin line outside it, round the tip, stopping on the inside.

Tip The fin gets wider near the tip.

Step 8: Little arms

Under each cheek, draw a short arm that bends out and gets wider into a hand with 3 round fingers.

Tip The arm's outside edge follows the body line. Rub out the body line inside each arm.

Step 9: Two back feet

At each bottom corner, draw a chubby leg and a flat-bottomed foot with 3 round toes.

Tip Draw the right foot over the tail, and rub out the tail lines inside it.

Step 10: Pond floor and bubbles

Draw a long floor line just under the feet and tail. Add 2 bubbles floating up by the left arm.

Step 11: Peach fin and cheeks

Go over your lines. Colour the tail fin and the 2 cheek blushes peach.

Step 12: Red gills, pink body

Colour the 6 gills red. Colour the head, body, tail, arms and feet pink, around the cheeks.

Tip Leave the eyes white.
