13 steps · Medium · about 10 min

Draw a whale breaching in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: back and head.

Print

  1. Step 1: Back and head

Start low on the left. Draw the back up and over, round the fat nose, and stop under it.

Tip One smooth curve, like half a rainbow, with a round nose.

  2. Step 2: Round tummy

Start under the nose. Draw the big round throat and tummy down, and stop level with the back.

Tip Fat at the throat, narrower at the bottom.

  3. Step 3: Big eye

On the head draw 1 big round eye. Fill it mostly black and leave a white shine.

  4. Step 4: Long smile

Start at the front of the nose. Draw a long curved smile and stop under the eye, curling up.

  5. Step 5: Tummy line

Start on the smile. Draw a long line down the body, and stop at the bottom.

Tip Everything on the tummy side of this line stays white.

  6. Step 6: Throat grooves

Start on the smile 3 times. Draw 3 long lines down the throat and stop on the tummy.

Tip Keep the lines apart, like stripes.

  7. Step 7: Hump fin

Start on the back, halfway up. Draw a small fin leaning down and stop on the back.

Tip Rub out the back line inside the fin.

  8. Step 8: Long flipper

Start on the tummy line. Draw a long flipper out to a soft point and back. Stop on the line.

Tip Rub out the lines inside the flipper.

  9. Step 9: Waves

Low down, under the whale, draw a row of wave bumps right across the paper.

  10. Step 10: Big splash

Start on a wave left of the whale. Draw big splash bumps over its bottom. Stop on a wave.

Tip Rub out the whale lines inside the splash.

  11. Step 11: Water drops

Under the tip of the flipper draw 3 small drops of water falling into the sea.

  12. Step 12: Blue sea

Colour the waves and the sea blue. Colour the splash and the 3 drops light blue.

  13. Step 13: Colour it grey

Colour the back, the head, the fin and the flipper dark grey, around the eye. Leave the tummy white.

Tip The chin, the throat and the tummy stay white.
