How to Draw a Car Engine

13 steps · Medium · about 10 min

Draw a car engine in 13 easy steps, about 10 minutes. Free, with a printable worksheet.

Each picture adds one red line. Draw that line, then scroll to the next picture. Rub out any dashed helper lines at the end. First up: the engine block.

Print

  1. Step 1: The engine block

In the middle of your paper draw a long box with soft corners.

Tip Leave room above for the top parts and a little below for the oil pan.

  2. Step 2: The top cover

Start on top of the box, near the left. Draw a low cover with round corners, stopping near the right.

  3. Step 3: The oil pan

Start under the box, near the left. Draw a shallow tray with a flat bottom, stopping near the right.

Tip The oil pan holds the oil that keeps the engine smooth.

  4. Step 4: The air filter

Above the cover draw a wide pan with round ends. From it draw 2 short lines down to the cover.

Tip Add a tiny bump on top for the nut that holds the lid.

  5. Step 5: The exhaust pipe

Across the middle of the block draw a long thin sausage, lying flat.

  6. Step 6: Four tubes

Draw 4 short tubes straight down from the cover to the pipe, with even gaps between them.

Tip Each tube is 2 lines that start on the cover and stop on the pipe.

  7. Step 7: The pulley

Left of the block draw a tall thin box. From it draw 2 short lines across to the block.

Tip Give the box soft corners. A belt runs round the pulley at the front of the engine.

  8. Step 8: The gearbox end

Start on the block's right end, near the top. Draw a big D and stop near the bottom.

Tip The gearbox bolts on here and sends the turning power to the wheels.

  9. Step 9: The ground

Draw a ground line under the oil pan, poking out on both sides.

  10. Step 10: Yellow and orange

Colour the air filter yellow. Colour the long pipe and the 4 tubes orange.

  11. Step 11: Grey block

Colour the block grey, going around the orange pipes. Colour the 2 short joining parts grey.

  12. Step 12: Red cover

    Colour the top cover red.

  13. Step 13: Dark grey parts

Go over your lines. Colour the oil pan, the pulley and the D dark grey. Your engine is done!
